An easy, evidence-based routine for skin over 40

A simple 3-step skincare routine set featuring cleanser, vitamin C serum, and mineral sunscreen bottles.

Glowing, healthy midlife skin isn’t about following a complicated and expensive 10-step “shelfie”—it comes from consistent use of the right active ingredients to support a robust skin barrier.

With the expertise of Medicart’s dermatologist Dr. Dominique Fausto De Souza, we’ve distilled the essential midlife skincare topicals into a simple, three-step morning and evening routine.

A.M.: Protection

  1. Gentle cleanser: Avoid stripping your already-compromised skin barrier by using a simple cream-based cleanser or micellar water.
  2. Vitamin C serum: Look for a stable formula with at least a 10% concentration to fight oxidative stress and help lighten dark spots.
  3. Mineral sunscreen (SPF 30+): Never skip this step! And be sure to reapply (aim for a 2-finger sized amount for face, neck, and chest, for example) every two hours when outside or sitting near a window. Mineral filters are less irritating for midlife skin (especially if you struggle with rosacea or melasma) and protect against non-UV light.

P.M.: Restauration

  1. Gentle cleanser: Remove the day’s pollutants and grime and get your skin ready for a productive night of repair.
  2. Moisturizer: Prioritize ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides to retain water and rebuild and protect your skin’s barrier.
  3. Retinoids: Choose the formula that matches your skin type and goals. This is the gold standard for collagen production.

Pro-tip

Because midlife skin can be more sensitive, we recommend the “sandwich technique”: apply a layer of moisturizer, then your retinoid, followed by a final layer of moisturizer or peptide serum. This buffers the active ingredient to help support the long-term collagen-building benefits without redness and irritation.

Whether you’re a skincare minimalist or are the first in line to try the latest clinical procedures, there are always ways to support your skin’s longevity. Even a few small, consistent changes–especially wearing sunscreen daily–can pay off with noticeable, cumulative results.
